A man outside Colombo Fort station wearing a badge offered to sell us reserved 1st class train tickets to Kandy for triple the price because the counter was closed. Is this a scam.

Yes, this is the most common scam at Colombo Fort. Official railway staff NEVER sell tickets outside the counters. The badge is fake. They are selling either forged tickets or unreserved 3rd class tickets dressed up as 1st class. Always buy directly from the glass counters inside the station.

Ignore anyone who approaches you before you reach the actual ticket windows. Just keep walking.

I fell for this. The ticket collector on the train almost kicked us off and we had to pay the fine plus the real ticket price.
