93,000 dengue cases - is it actually stupid to bring a 7-year-old in August?

Daily Mirror is saying 93k cases and 71 dead this year. We are a couple plus a 7-year-old, landing 24 Aug, two weeks, Colombo + Kandy + Trinco. Do we abort?

The outbreak is real. Health numbers this week: about 93,115 cases year-to-date, 71 deaths, almost 7,800 already in August. Worst districts Gampaha and Colombo, then Kandy, Matara, Kalutara, Galle. Western Province is about half. Fatality is still low, around 0.076%. Most families do not cancel. You do need bite discipline. DEET or picaridin from dawn and late afternoon - Aedes is a day biter. Long sleeves in Colombo gardens. No standing water on the balcony. Fever more than 2 days, clinic same day.

We are here with a kid. Plug-in mats are cheap. East and north show fewer cases than Colombo/Gampaha on the table, nowhere is zero. Get insurance that actually covers mosquito-borne stuff.

Do not abort. Do not be casual either. I would skip a garden hostel in Gampaha more than I would skip the whole country.

If she spikes a fever do not wait it out in a hostel because "it's just the heat".

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.

Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.

Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
