Vella Island is pure flat water but the wind regularly hits 25+ knots. The blowing sand will destroy a DSLR lens in minutes. You MUST use a rain cover or a dedicated underwater housing, even if you are standing on dry land. A 70-200mm lens is perfect because the kiters can ride incredibly close to the sandbar.

Do not even try to change lenses on Vella Island. The fine sand will instantly get onto your camera sensor. Pick one lens before you leave the boat.
