Are first class train tickets to Ella worth it.

Honestly, first class is not worth it if your main goal is photography. First class carriages are heavily air conditioned, which means the windows are permanently sealed shut. The glass is often tinted or dirty, totally ruining any chance of taking clear photos of the incredible tea estates.
The only reason to book first class is if you desperately need air conditioning or if you want to avoid the noise and bustle, as second class carriages tend to get very lively with locals singing and vendors walking through.
Second class reserved is universally considered the best option. You get a guaranteed, comfortable seat, but the windows open completely wide. This allows you to stick your camera out and feel the cool mountain breeze throughout the journey.

People outside stations offer to "help" buy tickets but charge large markups. They may buy cheap third-class tickets and sell as more expensive classes.
