Home stays in Kandy are widely considered the absolute highlight of many tourist trips. They offer an incredibly warm, deeply authentic look into Sri Lankan family life that sterile luxury hotels simply cannot replicate.
Look for highly reviewed properties on the hillsides surrounding Kandy Lake. You will get spectacular views, personalized local advice, and genuine hospitality for a fraction of the cost of a major resort.
They are perfectly safe and usually highly comfortable. The biggest advantage is the food. The host mothers cook phenomenal, highly traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry feasts that are vastly superior to bland hotel buffets.
Scam Watch: kandy
TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
