Fortunately aggressive biting sandflies are incredibly rare on the highly commercialized perfectly maintained tourist beaches like Unawatuna Mirissa and Bentota. The massive daily foot traffic and constant tidal flushing keep the sand pristine. You might occasionally encounter tiny harmless sand fleas near completely deserted unmaintained jungle coves exactly at sunset but standard coconut oil or local citronella spray entirely deters them instantly. It is absolutely not a massive prominent issue like it is in other Southeast Asian destinations.
