Is Unawatuna beach worth visiting or is it too crowded and developed now?
I keep reading conflicting things about Unawatuna. Some blogs say it's a must-see, others say it's overcrowded and polluted. I'll be in Galle for two nights. Is it still worth a half-day visit? Is the snorkelling any good? Any quieter spots nearby? I want honest opinions not travel-blog positivity.

Unawatuna is absolutely still worth visiting but you need honest expectations. The main horseshoe bay has become busy with restaurants and beach bars, and water quality dipped a few years ago. A 2019 clean-up project made a real difference. For snorkelling, the rocky headland on the right side of the bay near the Japanese Peace Pagoda path is the sweet spot: colourful corals, reef fish, the occasional turtle. Arrive before 9am to beat the day-trippers from Galle Fort.
Quieter option nearby: walk 15 minutes along the coastal path past the pagoda to Jungle Beach. No beach bars, mostly locals, excellent snorkelling. No facilities so bring water.
Practical tips:
- Mask and fins hire: around 500-700 LKR on the beach
- Best snorkelling tide: mid-morning incoming tide
- Evening is pleasant for a walk; seafront restaurants are good for watching the sunset
- From Galle Fort: 6km tuk-tuk (about 300 LKR) or a direct bus (100 LKR)
Totally doable as a half-day trip from Galle.
Dilini's answer is accurate. I'd add one important point: avoid Unawatuna during the southwest monsoon (May-October). Waves come directly into the bay and swimming is not safe. Outside those months the water is calm and clear. Jungle Beach she mentions is genuinely one of the most underrated spots on the south coast.
Scam Watch: galle
Someone befriends you and offers a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to buy gems at wholesale prices and resell them abroad for huge profit. They may show you fake export certificates. The gems are worthless glass or low-quality stones.
Restaurants without visible prices. Bill arrives with inflated charges (500 LKR coconut becomes 1500 LKR). "Service charges" added without disclosure.
