I travel with my own mask and fins and love easy shore snorkeling not boat trips Where can I snorkel straight off the beach here good coral and fish and where can I see wild sea turtles in the water (not the hatcheries) I gather Polhena and Hikkaduwa are spots Is June good given the coast seasons how is the visibility and what is the etiquette around the wild turtles so I do not harass them Snorkelers and marine folk please advise

Marine guide and snorkel instructor so the shore snorkeling and turtle picture The season caveat first and it is THE factor shore snorkeling needs calm clear water and that follows the monsoon like everything the SOUTH and WEST shore spots (Polhena Hikkaduwa Unawatuna) are at their CLEAREST and calmest in the December to April season in JUNE the southwest monsoon stirs these waters so visibility and calm are reduced and some days the surf makes shore snorkeling poor or unsafe the EAST coast (Pigeon Island off Nilaveli and the Trincomalee reefs) is in its prime calm clear season NOW in June so for June shore and easy snorkeling weight toward the EAST as the diving and beach threads keep showing The spots and what they offer Polhena (Matara south) a shallow reef lagoon snorkelable from shore with a chance of green turtles grazing the seagrass genuinely good for shore turtle encounters in season Hikkaduwa a marine sanctuary with shore reef and resident turtles often seen close in (calmer in the southwest season) the EAST Nilaveli and Pigeon Island the best reef snorkeling in June reachable by a short boat or partly from shore Wild turtles in the water (not hatcheries) yes Polhena and Hikkaduwa are known for green turtles you can swim near in the shallows a real wild encounter June visibility and safety honest in June the south spots can be murky and choppy check daily conditions and local advice the east is your clearer bet swim within your ability watch for rips (the beach safety threads) and never snorkel a rough shore alone Turtle etiquette crucial do NOT touch chase corner or ride a turtle (people genuinely try the riding it is harmful and shameful) keep a respectful distance let it surface and move freely do not block its path to the surface no flash do not feed them observe quietly and the turtle stays calm and you get the magic without the harm The June plan favour the east coast for clear calm shore snorkeling now keep the south spots for a winter return check daily conditions and treat the wild turtles with hands off respect

The east coast Pigeon Island in June was wonderful clear water reef sharks and turtles bring your own mask the rental quality is variable as you say your own fins make it

Saw green turtles grazing at Polhena in season and the hands off rule meant they stayed and fed calmly right beside us the people chasing them for photos got nothing the respect is also the better experience
