I am paddling out to the left point in Hiriketiya tomorrow. What is the local etiquette to avoid angering the instructors, and how shallow is the reef.

Hiriketiya point is highly localized. The etiquette is: sit on the shoulder, wait your turn, and NEVER drop in on a local instructor. If they call you into a wave, take it. The reef is very shallow, especially on the inside section. If you wipe out, fall flat like a starfish. Do not put your feet down violently or you will stomp on sea urchins or slice your feet on the live coral.

Wear reef booties. It might look kooky, but it saves your holiday.

Got it. Respect the locals, fall flat, watch for foamies.

Also, watch out for the beginners pushing 9-foot foam boards from the inside. They often lose control of their boards.
