I am a beginner and terrified of the sharp reef at Main Point. Are there sandy, forgiving breaks around Arugam Bay where I can practice safely.

Yes! Avoid Main Point. You want to take a tuk-tuk south to Peanut Farm. It has an incredible inside sandy section that is perfect for beginners. Elephant Rock also has a sandy bottom, but the paddle out is trickier. Alternatively, Baby Point (just inside Main Point) is all sand and great for learning when the swell is small.

Just remember that Elephant Rock has crocodiles in the lagoon behind it. Do not walk through the water to get to the beach.

Yes, it is about a 15-minute bumpy ride. Any tuk-tuk driver on the main strip knows exactly where it is.

Peanut Farm is beautiful. There is a little cafe there so you can hang out all day between surf sessions.
