Yes, there are definitely sea urchins in Hiriketiya, but they are exclusively located on the shallow rock reefs near the outer left and right point breaks where the advanced surfers go.

If you are a beginner taking lessons on the inside beach break, the bottom is purely soft sand. You do not need to wear reef booties at all and you are perfectly safe from urchins there.

Advanced surfers catching the left point break should definitely consider wearing booties, as falling into the shallow urchin beds during a low tide wipeout is a very common and painful mistake.
