I am an intermediate surfer hitting Arugam Bay. Is the reef at Main Point dangerous enough that I absolutely need booties.

Yes, wear them! The inside section of Main Point is a very shallow, razor-sharp live coral reef. If you wipe out on a low tide or put your feet down to navigate out of the impact zone, you will get sliced up. "Reef rash" infections heal very slowly in the tropics. Save your holiday and wear the booties.

Baby Point is also all sand, right inside Main Point.

I stepped on a sea urchin there and had to get the spines dug out with a needle. Wear them.

Also, respect the locals! The lineup is very competitive. Do not just paddle straight to the deepest peak.

Are there any sandy beaches nearby to practice on instead.

Yes, Peanut Farm is much safer for intermediates and has a great sandy section.
