I am terrified of cutting my feet on live coral. Are there any absolute beginner beaches on the south coast with a pure sand bottom.

Weligama is exactly what you are looking for. It is a 2km long bay with a completely flat, sandy bottom. There is no reef to worry about at the main beginner peaks. Hiriketiya is also mostly sand in the middle, but Weligama has much more space to fall safely without hitting other surfers.

Do not go to Midigama or Ahangama if you want sand. Those are almost entirely shallow reef breaks.

Dewata near Galle is also 100 percent sand and very protected from heavy winds.
