I am an intermediate surfer staying in Hiriketiya. The left point break looks amazing but very crowded with locals. What is the etiquette to catch a wave safely.

Hiriketiya is a tiny bay, and the left point is heavily localized by the instructors who live there. Do not paddle straight to the peak. Sit on the shoulder, smile, and let the locals take the set waves. If you show respect and wait your turn, they will eventually call you into a wave. Never drop in on anyone here; the reef is shallow and collisions are dangerous.

Also, watch out for the sea urchins on the reef if you kick out too close to the rocks.

I found it way too stressful. I just took a tuk-tuk to SK Town where the beach is wide open and empty.
