I am a complete snorkeling beginner who wants to see colorful fish and sea turtles up close. Is Hikkaduwa beach a safe and rewarding spot for first time snorkelers.

Hikkaduwa is absolutely perfect for beginner snorkelers and is famous for its resident green sea turtles that come right up to the shoreline daily. The Hikkaduwa Marine National Park offers calm shallow waters protected by an offshore reef which keeps the swimming area safe and easy to navigate. You can simply walk into the water from the beach near the Coral Sanctuary area and within minutes you will spot multiple turtles grazing on seagrass just a few meters from shore. Mask and snorkel rentals are available everywhere along the beach for around five hundred rupees per day. The best snorkeling visibility is during the southwest dry season from November through April when the water remains crystal clear. Always maintain a respectful distance from the turtles and never touch or chase them as this stresses the animals and can result in fines from park rangers. Glass bottom boat tours are also available for those who prefer to stay dry while still seeing the underwater life. Beyond turtles you can spot parrotfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, and various corals around the protected reef. Hikkaduwa makes an ideal beach day trip from Galle which is just thirty minutes away by tuk tuk or train.
