There is absolutely no official evidence that the elephants are chemically sedated for the Perahera. The temple authorities strongly deny this claim.

Their apparent calmness is generally attributed to years of rigorous intense training by their individual mahouts handlers. However animal welfare organizations argue that this training process itself is highly coercive and that forcing wild animals into such incredibly noisy chaotic environments is fundamentally cruel.
