I am visiting in August. Are the balcony seats worth the high price or is it better to stay on the street level with the local crowds.

Balcony seats in the shops along Dalada Veediya are definitely worth the money if you want to avoid standing for six hours in a massive crowd. They offer a great overhead view of the elephants and dancers. Prices range from fifty to eighty dollars. If you prefer the street level, you must arrive by 2:00 PM to secure a spot on the pavement and stay there until the parade starts around 8:00 PM. It is a test of endurance but the atmosphere is electric.
