The magnificent paintings covering the ceilings inside the Dambulla caves are highly authentic, but they are not entirely from one single ancient period. The original frescoes date back over two thousand years to the Anuradhapura era.

However, the caves have been a continuous site of worship. The paintings were extensively restored, painted over, and expanded upon by various Kandyan kings in the 18th century. What you see today is an incredible, genuine mix of ancient foundations and vibrant medieval Kandyan artistic restoration.
