Yes, the Dambulla cave complex is home to a massive population of very confident macaque monkeys. While they are usually not aggressive towards humans directly, they are incredibly skilled thieves when it comes to food and shiny objects.

You do not need to carry a stick to defend yourself; that might actually provoke them. Simply ensure all your bags are securely zipped shut, never carry exposed food or water bottles in your hands, and absolutely do not attempt to feed or pet them.
