There are hundreds of thousands of stray dogs roaming freely across Sri Lanka, visible on every beach and city street. However, they are overwhelmingly docile, lazy, and completely ignore tourists unless you actively offer them food.

Aggressive encounters are extremely rare. The dogs usually just want to sleep in the shade. If one does approach you barking, simply ignoring it and walking away confidently usually resolves the situation instantly. Never try to pet them.
