Should hikers be worried about wild animals when trekking through the remote tea estates.

Yes, there are leopards in the central highlands, and they occasionally roam through the tea estates at night. However, they are incredibly shy and deeply afraid of humans.

During the day, when tourists are hiking the Pekoe Trail, the noise of people walking completely drives them away. Hikers have absolutely nothing to worry about regarding wild leopard attacks on the trail.
