I am heading to Trincomalee in August. Is the water actually calm enough for swimming, or is there a heavy undertow like the South coast?

In August, the East Coast is perfectly calm. Uppuveli and Nilaveli are flat, sandy, and feel like massive swimming pools. It is incredibly safe for swimming.

Uppuveli has more cafes and a slight traveler vibe, whereas Nilaveli is very quiet and mostly resorts. Both are very safe for swimming in August.

Nilaveli is arguably the best swimming beach in the entire country during the summer. You can walk out 50 meters and the water is still only at your waist.

Sounds like heaven. I'll split my time between both beaches.
