I am looking for a 3 day wellness retreat in Kandy. How do I spot a fake tourist massage parlor versus an authentic Ayurvedic center.

Authentic Ayurveda is a medical practice, not just a spa day. A genuine center will have a certified Ayurvedic physician on staff who will check your pulse (Nadi Pariksha) and determine your Dosha before any treatment begins. If a place just hands you a laminated menu with prices for "relaxing oil massages," it is a tourist trap.

Look for centers registered with the Department of Ayurveda Sri Lanka. They will proudly display their certificate.

Avoid any place recommended by a random tuk-tuk driver. They are just taking you there for the commission.

Gem Museum Commission ScamVerified

TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.

Unofficial Temple Guide ScamVerified

Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
