Best hidden local restaurants near the Red Mosque in Pettah.

For the absolute best, most authentic biryani near the Red Mosque, you must navigate the chaotic streets of Pettah to find Hotel de Plaza. It is a bustling, no frills local joint where market workers go for massive, heavily spiced portions of chicken biryani.
If you want something slightly cleaner but still highly local, walk a few blocks to the New Banana Leaf restaurant. They serve phenomenal traditional rice and curry meals authentically wrapped in a warm banana leaf, which infuses the food with an incredible aroma.
Another legendary hidden spot is the Bombay Sweet Mahal on Second Cross Street. While famous for their incredible sugary treats, they also serve fantastic, incredibly cheap vegetarian samosas and savory snacks perfect for a quick, authentic lunch on the go.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
