I'll be in areas with poor signal. What's the best way to handle translation without internet?

Google Translate with offline language packs for Sinhala and Tamil works surprisingly well for basic communication. Download the packs before you arrive. For more natural conversation, many younger Sri Lankans speak good English, especially in tourist areas. In rural areas, simple gestures + Google Translate usually suffice. Learning a few basic Sinhala phrases (hello, thank you, how much) goes a long way with locals.

I downloaded offline packs and also used a small phrasebook app. Worked fine for most situations.
