The prime season for spotting massive blue whales and sperm whales off the coast of Mirissa runs from late November through April. During these specific months the ocean is remarkably calm and the whales migrate right past the southern tip of the island.
If you visit between May and October the southwest monsoon creates incredibly rough dangerous ocean swells. Many reputable tour operators completely cease operations during this time for safety reasons.
March and April are universally considered the absolute peak months. The visibility is fantastic and the boats often encounter massive pods of playful spinner dolphins alongside the migrating whales.
