To completely avoid the brutal midday heat, you must arrive at the Dambulla Cave Temple ticket office exactly when it opens at 7:00 AM. Climbing the 360 stone stairs is vastly more comfortable in the cool morning air, and the caves will be peacefully empty.

Visiting late in the afternoon, around 4:00 PM, is your second best option. The intense sun has faded, the large tour bus groups have mostly left, and you get the added bonus of watching the sunset over the jungle canopy from the rocky terrace outside the caves.
