The driver took us to a moonstone mine. Are the prices there heavily inflated.

The moonstone mines in Meetiyagoda are a fascinating look at traditional mining techniques, where men dig deep shafts in the mud by hand. The tour of the mine itself is usually completely free and very authentic.

However, the gift shop at the end of the tour is a massive tourist trap. The polished moonstones and silver jewelry they sell there are heavily overpriced to account for the massive commissions paid to your driver.

You are under absolutely zero obligation to buy anything. Enjoy the educational tour, tip the miners directly with a small note, and politely walk out of the jewelry shop without opening your wallet.
