Buying pure Kithul treacle for Ayurvedic wellness diet in Kandy
2 Answers from travellers
Finding 100% pure Kithul in supermarkets is difficult because many commercial brands mix it with sugar syrup to cut costs. The best place in Kandy is the local village collectives or the Hela Bojun food stalls, which strictly source from local farmers. Pure Kithul has a slight woody, smoky flavor and is thinner than commercial pancake syrup.
If you visit a spice garden in Matale (just north of Kandy), they often sell pure Kithul jaggery and treacle in their pharmacies. Just be prepared to pay a premium tourist price for it.

TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
