Head straight to Main Street in Pettah. The entire street is lined with textile shops. Look for shops like "Fashion Bug" or the smaller unbranded stalls selling white cotton or linen. A simple white sarong or loose cotton trousers should cost no more than 1000 to 1500 LKR. Remember to haggle a little if there are no price tags.

Make sure it is actual cotton! The cheap polyester stuff will make you sweat endlessly in the temple heat.

You can also just buy a standard white National Dress shirt. It looks very respectful and is incredibly airy.
