Yes, several cultural centers in Kandy offer interactive experiences. While the main evening shows are strictly for viewing, you can arrange private daytime workshops through the Kandy Lake Club.
Experienced dance masters will happily teach foreign tourists the basic athletic steps, hand mudras, and traditional drum rhythms in a highly engaging, sweaty one hour session. Just ask your hotel to call ahead and book it.
