Walking along the railway tracks in Sri Lanka is actually a very common local practice, and tourists frequently do it in scenic areas like Kadugannawa or Ella to get the perfect photograph.

It is generally safe, provided you remain highly vigilant. Trains in the hill country move relatively slowly. Always keep your ears open for the loud train horn, and immediately step far off the tracks onto the grassy embankments when you hear one approaching.

Never walk on the tracks while wearing noise cancelling headphones, and avoid walking through long railway tunnels where there is absolutely no space to jump out of the way if a train suddenly appears.
