We are riding scooters across the causeways to Kayts island. Is Charty Beach a good spot to hang out for the afternoon, and where can we find fresh Palmyra toddy in the area.

Charty Beach is a hidden gem in Kayts. It is very clean, shaded by coconut trees, and usually completely empty on weekdays. For fresh Palmyra toddy, you need to go in the morning. Ask any tuk tuk driver in Kayts town to take you to the local tavern or "Kulla". The fresh morning sap is sweet and mildly alcoholic, but it gets very sour and strong by late afternoon.

The drive across the causeway connecting Jaffna to Kayts with the ocean on both sides is stunning. Perfect for scooter rides.

Charty Beach has some changing rooms and basic facilities built by the local council, which makes it a very comfortable place to chill for a few hours.

Just be cautious swimming too far out. The drop off can be sudden compared to Casuarina beach.

Buy some spicy fried fish from the small stalls near the Kayts jetty to take with you to the beach. Best combination with the toddy.
