I'm a keen cyclist. Are there good guided or self-guided cycling routes? Which area is better for a few days of cycling?

The Sigiriya-Habarana-Dambulla area has excellent quiet roads through villages and reservoirs. You can cycle to Pidurangala, the ancient irrigation tanks, and even around Minneriya. Galle Fort area is more urban and traffic-heavy, though the coastal road south from Galle toward Unawatuna is nice early morning. For proper cycling, base in Sigiriya area.
