I am an intermediate surfer. Should I base myself in Hiriketiya or Ahangama for a week. Which has better, less localized waves.

Base yourself in Ahangama. Hiriketiya is a beautiful horseshoe bay, but it is tiny, and the single left point break is fiercely localized and incredibly crowded. Ahangama, on the other hand, spans several kilometers of coastline with multiple distinct breaks (Marshmallows, Lazy Left, Kabalana, Animals). There are far more waves to choose from, spreading the crowd out, making it much friendlier for intermediates.

Are the reefs in Ahangama dangerous.

Just wear booties if you are nervous about the reef.

Lazy Left and Marshmallows are deep water reefs. Very forgiving. The Rock is shallow and heavy.

Ahangama definitely. Plus, if you want a break from the reef, you can surf the sandy beach break at Kabalana.

Hiriketiya is better for nightlife and aesthetic cafes, but worse for actual surfing unless you are a beginner on the inside sand.
