The main spine road running up the entire Kalpitiya peninsula is fully paved and in excellent condition completely safe for a standard small rental car.

However the moment you turn off the main road to access the secluded beaches or specific kite surfing camps the roads instantly turn into very deep soft sand. A standard car will absolutely get hopelessly bogged down within minutes. You must leave your car at a secure spot and hire a local tuk tuk or a 4x4 to navigate those final sandy stretches.
