I am worried about petting the beach dogs. Is rabies a major concern.

Rabies is present in Sri Lanka, though the government and local charities run extensive vaccination programs for street dogs. To be absolutely safe, you must avoid petting or playing with stray dogs, no matter how friendly they look.

If you are ever bitten or scratched by any dog or monkey, you must immediately wash the wound with soap and visit a local hospital to receive a rabies post exposure vaccine shot, which is readily available and highly effective.
