Are there official guides available to explain the history or can we read signs ourselves.

You absolutely do not need to hire a guide to explore the Dambulla Cave Temple. The site is highly intuitive, consisting of just five main caves located linearly along the rock terrace. You can easily walk through them at your own pace and admire the statues independently.

However, there is very little written signage explaining the deep historical significance of the different frescoes and the different eras of Buddha statues. If you are deeply interested in Sri Lankan history, hiring a government licensed guide at the ticket office for a few dollars provides incredible context.
