We saw people feeding fruit to a massive wild elephant over the electric fence on the main road near Udawalawe. Is this legal and safe to do.

It is highly illegal and incredibly dangerous. Feeding wild elephants habituates them to vehicles and roads, increasing the risk of tragic accidents. The DWC heavily fines anyone caught doing this. Please observe them from a safe distance inside a safari jeep and do not throw food from the highway.

Understood. We will definitely avoid doing it and just take photos from the jeep.

An elephant actually smashed a car window last month looking for food because of this habituation.

Locals sell bananas specifically for this right next to the fence. It is a huge problem.
