I practice daily and want a proper yoga RETREAT here for a week or so to deepen my practice not a teacher training (not ready) and not a resort that bolts a yoga class onto a spa How do I find a genuine retreat with real teaching and a proper daily practice rhythm where are they on the south coast or in the hills what does a real one cost and look like versus the wellness theatre and is June workable Practitioners who found the real thing please point the way

Answering my own thread after a week of research and a few calls because the distinction matters How to tell a genuine practice retreat from wellness theatre the markers a real retreat has a STRUCTURED daily practice rhythm typically two sessions a day a dynamic morning practice and a restorative or pranayama and meditation evening session led by an experienced resident teacher with a clear lineage or method not a rotating spa instructor it has a community a shared schedule shared often vegetarian meals silence or simplicity built in and a focus on the PRACTICE not the pampering the wellness theatre by contrast is a beautiful resort with a daily drop in class a spa menu and cocktails lovely but not a retreat ask before booking who teaches what lineage how many practice hours a day is it residential and structured or a la carte the genuine ones answer with a real daily timetable Where they are the south coast cluster around the surf and wellness towns (the Ahangama Talalle Mirissa Hiriketiya stretch) has dedicated yoga retreat centres (shalas with residential programs) and the hills around Ella and the cooler interior have some lovely quieter ones the south coast for the beach and surf and yoga combination the hills for cool quiet focus What a real one costs and looks like a week long residential practice retreat with accommodation meals and two daily sessions runs a moderate amount (less than a teacher training more than just a room) you get a simple comfortable room vegetarian food the practice space and the daily rhythm not luxury spa pricing necessarily the value is the teaching and the structure June workability YES the south coast is monsoon but yoga is INDOOR practice and many retreats run year round or shift to covered shalas the rain on the shala roof during a restorative evening practice is honestly lovely the off season also means smaller quieter groups and better rates just confirm the specific retreat runs in June some pause The approach that found me the real thing ignore the prettiest resort photos ask every place for the daily timetable and the teacher lineage choose the one that talks about PRACTICE not amenities and the south coast or hills both deliver genuine retreats if you filter for structure over spa

The talks about practice not amenities test is the same both directions quality filter the yoga teacher training thread used for choosing a course the genuine places foreground the work not the setting

The rain on the shala roof during evening practice being a feature not a bug is the June reframe yoga is indoors so the monsoon barely matters and the quieter off season groups sound ideal

Ask for the daily timetable and the teacher lineage is the filter the ones that answer with practice hours are real the ones that answer with spa amenities are theatre brilliant distinction thank you
