Arugam Bay is full of avocado toast. Where on the east coast can we find authentic Muslim Biryani and try local palm toddy.

You have to leave the tourist strip of A-Bay. Take a 5-minute tuk-tuk north into Pottuvil town. Look for the local Muslim eateries near the main junction. They serve incredible Sri Lankan-style Biryani cooked in massive pots, usually ready by 12:30 PM. It sells out fast! For palm toddy, ask a tuk-tuk driver to take you to the local "Kallu" tavern on the outskirts, but go early morning for the fresh stuff.

The local spot opposite the mosque in Pottuvil makes the best biryani I have ever had.

Make sure you eat with your right hand only! It is the cultural norm in the local Muslim restaurants.

In the morning it is sweet and mildly fermented. By the afternoon, it is very sour and quite alcoholic.
