It is Vesak day in Colombo. We want to eat at the free food stalls (Dansal). Are there specific areas in the city that have the best traditional vegetarian curries.

During Vesak, the entire city goes 100% vegetarian out of respect. You will find massive Rice and Curry Dansals in residential and temple-dense areas like Borella, Nugegoda, and Maharagama. The food is exceptionally good because local aunties cook it as a community offering. Just look for the massive crowds and loudspeakers playing Buddhist chanting, get in line, and enjoy!

We found a massive noodle stall near Town Hall. The hospitality is unmatched here.

The fried manioc (cassava) with spicy sambol is the absolute best street snack you will find at a Dansal.

Do not be shy, locals genuinely love it when foreigners participate. Eat with your right hand!
