I am in Colombo for Vesak. There are free food stalls (Dansal) everywhere. Is it safe for foreigners to eat this food without getting sick.

Yes, Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) heavily monitor Dansal during Vesak to ensure hygiene. The food is usually very fresh because it is cooked in massive batches and served immediately. Stick to hot foods like rice and curry or fried noodles, and avoid the colorful iced drinks if you have a sensitive stomach.

The locals love it when foreigners join the queue. It is a huge sign of respect for the culture.

We had free manioc and sambol yesterday. It was amazing and we felt perfectly fine today.

Just be prepared to wait. The queues for the best ice cream or biryani Dansal can stretch for blocks.
