We are in Colombo for the Vesak festival. There are free food stalls everywhere. Is it safe for tourists to eat this without getting sick.

Yes, Public Health Inspectors tightly monitor Dansal hygiene. The hot food (rice, noodles, fried manioc) is incredibly fresh because it is cooked continuously for the massive crowds. Locals genuinely love it when foreigners join the queue, it shows respect for the culture. Enjoy the sober weekend, eat the street food, and view the illuminated temples!

Do not try to pay them! It is an offering. Giving money is highly offensive.

Avoid the iced colored drinks if you have a sensitive stomach, just to be safe.

Just smile, say "Sthuthi" (thank you), and enjoy the atmosphere.

The fried manioc with sambol was amazing. So glad we tried it.
