It happens occasionally with the less reputable beach racks. The easiest way to avoid it is to take 10 seconds to flip the board over and literally wiggle the fins in front of the owner before you walk away. Take a quick photo of the bottom of the board with your phone. If they see you documenting the condition, they will not try to scam you upon return.

If you do actually snap a fin box (easy to do if you ride straight onto the sand), you do have to pay for it. But 50 USD is way too much.

Rent from the established surf schools instead of the random guys sitting under umbrellas. They are much more professional.
