Bawa is the father of Tropical Modernism and his work is increasingly a destination in itself. Core trail: (1) Number 11 in Colombo, his own townhouse, BOOK AHEAD via the Geoffrey Bawa Trust as it is by guided tour only with limited slots; (2) Lunuganga, his country estate near Bentota, an extraordinary garden-house you can tour by day or stay in as a guesthouse, 100 percent worth the detour; (3) the Parliament Complex at Sri Jayewardenepura (admired from a distance only, not publicly tourable). To STAY in his hotels: Heritance Kandalama near Dambulla (the iconic forest-roof hotel cantilevered over the rock face), Jetwing Lighthouse in Galle, and Bentota Beach Hotel. Aim for a stay plus Number 11 plus Lunuganga as the classic three-stop.

Booking Number 11 and a night at Kandalama right now. Merci!

Heritance Kandalama was the highlight of our trip. The forest grows over the building, monkeys on the balconies, infinity pool merging into the reservoir. Honestly a piece of art you sleep in.

The Geoffrey Bawa Trust website is the only legitimate booking channel for Number 11 and Lunuganga tours. Many third-party "Bawa tours" online inflate the price; book direct.
