Arriving in Colombo next week and need reliable mobile data for navigation and communication throughout the trip, including rural areas.
1. Which mobile network has the best coverage across Sri Lanka including hill country and east coast?
2. Can I buy a tourist SIM at the airport or is it better to wait until the city?
3. What does a good tourist SIM package actually cost and what data do you get?
4. Are there dead zones I should know about (Ella, Arugam Bay, remote areas)?

Best network for tourists: Dialog is the clear recommendation for coverage breadth, including hill country and east coast. Mobitel has good urban coverage but is weaker in rural areas. Airtel is cheaper but coverage gaps are more frequent.
Buying at the airport: Yes — Mobitel and Dialog both have counters in the arrivals hall at BIA, open 24 hours. This is the most convenient option. You will need your passport for registration (this is a legal requirement under Sri Lankan telecom regulations).
Tourist SIM packages (Dialog, 2025 approximate):
- 30-day tourist SIM: LKR 1,500–2,000 for 15–20GB data. Includes calls.
- eSIM: Dialog does offer eSIM — check their website before arrival. Activatable online before landing.
Coverage specific locations:
- Ella: Dialog and Mobitel both have 4G. Reception can be patchy in the valley (stay on high ground for best signal).
- Arugam Bay: Dialog works well. Mobitel is weaker east of Pottuvil.
- Sigiriya/Dambulla area: Excellent coverage, all networks.
- Knuckles Range / remote jungle areas: Expect no signal. Download offline Google Maps before entering remote areas.
WhatsApp calls: Work normally on all networks. No restrictions.
eSIM: Available and recommended if your phone supports it — eliminates the airport queue. Dialog and Mobitel both offer eSIM top-up packages bookable online.
On arrival process: Airport counter, show passport, choose package, SIM inserted and tested in under 10 minutes. Straightforward.
Bought Dialog SIM at the airport counter at 11 PM — the counter was open, no queue, took 8 minutes including registration. 20GB lasted my 17-day trip easily (using Maps constantly, uploading photos). Signal in Ella was fine on Dialog. Lost signal briefly driving through a mountain tunnel near Kandy and in one stretch of jungle road toward Sinharaja. Everywhere else: reliable 4G.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
