Most dogs in Hiri are friendly during the day, but at night they pack up and become highly territorial, especially near the dark jungle paths leading out of the bay. Do not walk alone. If you are bitten or scratched (even a tiny nip), you MUST take it seriously. Wash the wound with soap for 15 minutes and go directly to the Matara General Hospital for free Rabies PEP vaccines. Rabies is fatal; do not risk it.

If a dog barks and approaches, do not run. Stand tall, yell loudly, and pretend to throw sand. They will retreat.

Take a tuk-tuk back to your hostel from the party. It is 300 rupees and keeps you totally safe from the dogs.
