Most beach dogs are harmless and vaccinated by NGOs (look for a clipped ear), but night packs can be aggressive. If bitten or even scratched, wash the wound with soap and water for 15 minutes immediately. Sri Lanka takes rabies seriously. Every major government General Hospital stocks the rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) vaccine, and it is free for tourists. Go immediately to Matara hospital.

Private clinics will charge you, and they often do not stock the Human Rabies Immunoglobulin (HRIG). Always go to a Government Hospital.

Do not run if they bark at you. Stand your ground and pretend to pick up a rock. They will run away.
