Is the trail to the base of Bambarakanda falls clearly marked or do we need a local guide to navigate the pine forests.

The trail from the Kalupahana main road to the viewing platform at the base of the falls is a very obvious, well-trodden dirt road. You absolutely do not need a guide for this. If you want to hike to the UPPER falls (Lanka Ella) through the pine forests, a guide is highly recommended as those paths are confusing.

Wear good shoes. The pine needles make the ground as slippery as ice.

Local kids will jump on your tuktuk and demand money to show you the way. Just ignore them.
